Reference and source
The source could be the text or any other work providing you with the knowledge that is being used (whereas the real reference to the supply this is certainly used is named a guide). These terms are synonymous; in several reference styles, the list of sources used in an academic text are called ‘References,’ for instance to some extent.
Whenever talking about the real function of the guide within the written text, but, it might be beneficial to differentiate between your terms ‘source’ and ‘reference’.
